The Opening of the Defence Medical Service in

Whittington May 2014

Whittington WI were lucky to be chosen as one of 15 organisations throughout the locality to be present for the opening of D.M.S. Whittington in the presence of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. Thursday May 8th dawned, a grey and drizzly beginning. 9am and four WI members arrived and with us came the heavy rain, it bounced back off the tarmac  at us.  We located the allotted pitch with a very wet
wooden trestle table.  How fortunate that Mrs Roberts had purchased a gazebo, no sides but at least it was a bit of cover from the

rain. With help from some recruits the gazebo was up, after drying the table we lined it with polythene and then our cloth and set

up a lovely display of craft work plus some preserves and loaves of bread and the all important trophies which were still in our possession.  By this time we were already soaking wet and very cold and it was only 10am, HRH did not arrive until 2pm.  We were fed and watered by the catering staff and “Oh My “was it welcome!! There was plenty of time for us to look at all the other wet and bedraggled people and their displays.

Just before 2pm the helicopter arrived and duly the official car made its way  through a guard of honour made up of men and

women from the Services they did look so very smart, the Duchess waved as she went past towards the main area for the Service

and Dedication.
After the Service and then an indoor reception The Duchess of Cornwall went on a walk-about, this was very well planned, she

spoke to a
lot of children, Brownies and children from Whittington Primary School who were in front of me. During the Royal visit the rain stopped and as the helicopter took off for the return trip the heavens opened again and we were very ,very pleased when we could pack everything up and return home.

This was an experience for us all.

Beanies for brave troops far from home

On a bitterly cold, snowy morning near the end of March, members of Whittington WI were among those invited to the Staffordshire Regimental Museum at Whittington Barracks for the official handing over of the

beanie hats we had made for troops going out to Afghanistan.

Christopher Pincher, MP for Tamworth, had organised the appeal for knitted wool hats and Whittington WI got their knitting needles clicking and helped contribute to this wonderful idea.

At the time of the handover, 730 hats had been donated, coming from as far afield as the north of Scotland and even Pennsylvania, USA. There to welcome the guests were Derby the ram, mascot of the 2nd Mercian Brigade, and Watchman V, a lovely Staffordshire Bull Terrior of 3rd Battalion the Mercian Brigade (Stafford),

both under the watchful eye of their handlers.
